Freeview is a selection of around 40 television channels and over 30 radio stations that you can receive through an aerial. There’s no subscription to pay: they’re all free. All you have to do is have the correct equipment! You can convert your existing TV with a set-top box, or (if you’re replacing an old set) buy an IDTV - a ‘digital’ television with Freeview already built in!

All the channels you can already receive through your aerial are also on Freeview – but you get much more with the digital versions. True widescreen pictures, improved picture and sound quality, digital text and an on-screen programme guide are all thrown in!

You’ll also be able to enjoy lots of new channels. Some are from the broadcasters you know, and some are from those you don’t. Many of the most popular and well-known digital channels are available on Freeview: from Virgin 1 to ITV2, BBC Three to Film4, and UKTV History to Sky News… there’s something for everyone. Children’s programmes, documentaries, films, sport and drama - all for free, through your aerial.

Digital television also allows you to “interact” with your telly: pressing the red button can access live sports coverage, music concerts and karaoke sing-a-longs. To give your eyes a break, there are plenty of radio stations to choose from, too. Everything from news and current affairs to the latest chart and pop music is available, so you’re bound to find something you like!

If you’re unable to receive Freeview where you live, there is an alternative:

Freesat is a television service that brings you lots more channels and services through a satellite dish.
